ArcMap is a Windows-based desktop geographic information system (GIS) application used to create maps, edit and manage spatial data, and perform geospatial analysis. It organizes work in map documents (.mxd) and supports common vector and raster formats such as shapefiles, file and enterprise geodatabases, and imagery. Core capabilities include cartographic design and labeling, projection and coordinate system management, georeferencing, digitizing with topology tools, and an extensive set of geoprocessing tools. Advanced workflows are available through extensions like Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and Network Analyst. Automation is supported via ModelBuilder and Python (arcpy). ArcMap produces high‑quality map layouts for print and digital delivery (PDF, image files, and web services) and is widely used in planning, environmental management, utilities, public safety, and research. Note: ArcMap is in mature support, with the 10.8.x release line as its last; ArcGIS Pro is the modern successor.
